O’Betty’s Red Hot in Athens

A recent road trip took us through Athens, home of Ohio University. We had plans to explore the campus, but a thunderstorm threatened and we were only able to get a few shots. Defeated, we decided to save our campus tour for another day.

A Little Place Just Off Court Street

Still hungry and trying to salvage the afternoon, we made a stop at the legendary O’Betty’s Red Hot. From the front, O’Betty’s looks like a tiny place, sandwiched between two much larger buildings on West State Street. It’s just a few steps off Court Street, which is the main drag off campus.

Due to COVID concerns, only the pickup window in the front was open. We were able to sneak a quick look inside. The seating area inside is small, but there are tables on the sidewalk out front.

Decisions, Decisions

I was at first tempted to do my dog up my way by ordering the Hootchy-Kootchy (plain hot dog) and dressing it up with O’Betty’s extensive list of toppings. However I decided last minute to leave the dog styling to the pros and picked one of the specialities on the menu.

After going back and forth between several choices, I finally settled on the Blaze. Why? Because bacon, that’s why. The Blaze is topped with smoked bacon and their delicious cole slaw. Natalie went traditional with the Gypsy, topped with catsup, mustard, sweet relish, and diced onions. And Amanda? She passed on the dogs in favor of an order of chili cheese fries. I added an order of fries and cheese to the order as well.

The Verdict

The dogs were delicious, with a nice snap. The cole slaw was delicious and a nice topping. Natalie enjoyed her dog as well. The fries were tasty and crisp and Amanda enjoyed the chili on hers. Everything tasted fresh and was served hot.

According to their website they use beef wieners that are made in Ohio. Many of their sauces and topping are either made in house or locally and they source fresh, local produce as well.

Give O’Betty’s Red Hot a Try

O’Betty’s is definitely worth a stop if you’ll be in the Athens area. It was good food, delivered with a smile, and at a very reasonable price.  Be sure to check out their website and menu before you go.
